About Kalamoti

Kalamoti, a Living Medieval Village

Kalamoti is one of the largest and most authentic mastic villages in southern Chios, located about 23 km from Chios Town. At its heart lies the old medieval settlement, a compact maze of narrow alleys, stone houses, and arched passages that preserve the architectural character of the island’s fortified past.

Although the defensive walls are no longer visible, the village retains its medieval layout: two central squares host local tavernas and cafés, while stone facades, low light, and covered walkways create a setting that feels almost untouched by time. Life here follows a slow, local rhythm, and many residents still work the land and cultivate the famous Chios mastic, keeping centuries-old traditions alive.

Throughout the year, Kalamoti celebrates its culture and history. During Carnival, the central square fills with music, and the traditional “detos” dance is performed, along with the reenactment of the Kalamoti wedding — moments that unite the community. Historic churches such as Agia Kyriaki, Agia Paraskevi, and Kato Panagia, along with numerous small chapels, enrich the village’s cultural fabric.

Staying here means becoming part of a real village, not simply visiting one. Nearby, the cosmopolitan harbor of Komi and beaches such as Lilikas, Viri, Mavra Volia, and Vrulidia offer a perfect blend of coastal and village life.
