Beaches and Coastal Exploration

The southern coast of Chios is dotted with some of the island’s most scenic and unspoiled beaches. From Emporios, with its soft sand and calm waters, to the striking volcanic pebbles of Mavra Volia, and the quiet coves of Vrulidia, each spot offers a different coastal experience. Whether you want to swim, sunbathe, snorkel, or simply enjoy the dramatic beauty of the shoreline, these beaches provide a perfect escape from everyday life. Coastal paths and hidden bays encourage exploration, while traditional tavernas along the way offer a taste of local seafood and flavors.

Many of the island’s most beautiful beaches lie within a short distance of Kalamoti, making the village an excellent base for exploring the coastline.

Beaches Near Kalamoti

Komi Beach

Just 4 km from Kalamoti, Komi is one of the most popular beaches on the island. The long sandy shore and shallow waters make it ideal for swimming and relaxing by the sea.

The beach is well organized, with cafés, beach bars, restaurants, and shops offering everything from light snacks to traditional seafood dishes.

 

Viri Beach

Viri is another organized beach known mainly for its lively atmosphere and music, often attracting visitors looking for beach parties and entertainment.

 

Agios Giannis Beach

Located about 7.5 km from Kalamoti, Agios Giannis is a narrower beach with pebbles but offers a peaceful setting and one of the best tavernas in the area.

 

Vokaria

Below the village of Nenita, about 10 km from Kalamoti, lies Vokaria. While it is not ideal for swimming, it is known for its excellent seaside café and restaurant.

 

Gridia

Also located near Nenita, Gridia is another coastal area appreciated mainly for its excellent seafood restaurants and beautiful views.

Unique Beaches of Southern Chios

Emporios Harbor

The small harbor of Emporios lies about 6.5 km from Kalamoti and is filled with tavernas and small guesthouses. From here the road leads to one of the most famous beaches on the island.

 

Mavra Volia

The legendary Mavra Volia beach is one of the most unique landscapes in the Aegean. Its smooth black pebbles were formed by volcanic activity from the extinct Psaronas volcano, creating a striking contrast with the deep blue waters.

The beach remains largely untouched, with only a small kiosk nearby, preserving its natural beauty.

 

Vroulidia

Located at the southern tip of Chios about 11 km from Kalamoti, Vroulidia is a stunning small cove surrounded by cliffs. A short path leads down to the beach, where turquoise waters and dramatic scenery create an unforgettable setting.

 

Salagona

A larger organized beach with umbrellas and a small café, Salagona is another popular swimming spot near the village of Olympoi.

 

Agia Dynami

Agia Dynami is known for its beautiful turquoise waters and natural shade from the surrounding trees. Although relatively small, it is one of the most beloved beaches in the region.

Exploring the Western Coast

Further west, the coastline becomes more rugged and scenic.

Lithi

The seaside village of Lithi, about 16 km from Kalamoti, combines a sandy beach with a small fishing harbor. It is famous among locals for its excellent seafood tavernas and fresh fish.

 

Elinta

Elinta is a large quiet bay surrounded by mountains and pine forests that reach the sea. During World War II the legendary Greek submarine Papanikolis once hid in this sheltered bay.

Today it offers a peaceful setting with crystal-clear waters and white pebbles.

 

Trachili

A remote pebble beach with turquoise waters, Trachili is ideal for visitors looking for a completely natural and untouched environment.

 

Tiganí

Located on the northwestern side of the island, Tiganí is a large beach with pebbles and sand, surrounded by pine trees and unique vegetation that reaches the sea.
